JoAnn Frances Alvarez (Martinez), age 65, of Bay City, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, June 22, 2026, at McLaren Bay Region, surrounded by her loving family.
JoAnn was born in Bay City on April 4, 1961, the daughter of Robert and Josephine (Garcia) Martinez, Sr. She remained a lifelong resident of the community she cherished.
JoAnn was a vibrant, outgoing woman who brought warmth and light into the lives of all who knew her. She had a remarkable gift for connection-it seemed she knew everyone wherever she went. JoAnn never met a stranger and formed countless friendships throughout her life, embracing many as part of her extended family. She loved spending time with her friends, especially going out dancing, and she filled every room with her joyful energy.
Above all, JoAnn was a devoted wife, loving mother, and proud grandmother. Her family meant everything to her, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Her grandchildren were the absolute joy of her life, and she poured her love into them daily. JoAnn leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, strength, and grace.
On May 7, 1988, she married the love of her life, Richard "Rick" Alvarez, who survives her.
She is also survived by her loving parents, Robert and Josephine Martinez, Sr.; her children: Richard (Erin Lockey) Martinez, Angel (Felicia) Alvarez, Susie Alvarez, and Jesse Robert Martinez; and her cherished grandchildren: Kalle, Jordyn, Chase, Elleyana, Richard, Vida, Tino, Amaya, Alivia, Easton, Cruz, Luca, Jacob, Jessica, Monica, Nevaeh, and Mireya.
JoAnn is further survived by her siblings: Bobby (Jennifer) Martinez, Abby (Bob) Surgeson, Angel Martinez, Manuel (Laura) Martinez, and Joe Martinez; her brothers-in-law, Phil (Frances) Alvarez, Moses Alvarez, Jr., and Dan (Irene) Alvarez; along with many beloved in-laws, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Paula; her grandparents; her granddaughter, Angel Alvarez; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Moses and Susie Alvarez; and her sister-in-law, Ruth Alvarez.
JoAnn will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Celebration of JoAnn's Life with be held Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Squires Funeral Home, 211 N. Henry Street, Bay City, MI 48706. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 PM until the time of service. Shari passed away peacefully on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Huron Woods Nursing Center with her family by her side at the age of 59.
She was born on August 27, 1966, in Bay City, Michigan, to the late Jack Sr. and Shirley (Feet) Johnstone. Shari had a special love for animals, particularly dogs and cats, and enjoyed expressing her creativity through arts and crafts. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family and the many memories they shared together.
Left to cherish her memory are her brothers, Gordon (Diane) Johnstone and Jack Johnstone Jr.; her nieces and nephews, Kristina, Scott, Todd, Kevin, and Brandon; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Shari was preceded in death by her brother, Keith Johnstone.
In keeping with Shari’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private inurnment will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery at a later date.
